Going to Austin for SXSW or the devMEET?

If so, we want to help you make the most of your journey!  This blog is full of random facts about Austin and tips from locals for the best places to check out in the city.

:batman:  You probably already know that SXSW is held in Austin, TX, but what you may not know is that Austin has the largest bat population in North America!  Does that mean it has the highest vampire population as well?  :ohnoes:  If you want see this for yourself, megturney (Meg) says you can see a massive amount of bats flying out from under the Congress bridge at dusk!

  Meg also knows of some great food spots, including Kerby Lane (diner fare, open 24 hours), P. Terry's (burgers), and Chuy's (Tex-Mex) to name a few.

:flirty:  If you're visiting, Meg highly recommends a trip along South Congress Ave. to see a ton of cute, fun, and funky shops -- including an old-fashioned candy shop and a costume shop called "Lucy In Disguise.”  It's really great for playing dress-up, grabbing a fun accessory, or an outfit for a silly night out.

:lightbulb:  If you're ever stuck in Austin overnight, fear not because it’s the only city in the world to still have Moonlight towers installed!  Back in the 19th century, these huge structures were used to illuminate the night.  Now, they still shine brightly, but just with a little more character.

:music:  Like music? Austin is considered the live music capital of the world!  Enjoy some rock n’ roll with Texas's biggest bands and over 100 live music venues.  StJoan can attest to this, calling the live music clubs and record stores, like Waterloo, the backbone of the Austin scene.

:ahoy:  There are a bazillion clubs and bars for every lifestyle.  2008 was a great year for most Austinites, since it was rated the #1 drunkest city by Forbes.com.  It was a fantastic year that only 20% of the population remembers.

:bulletpink:  Who likes pink?  If so, Austin's Capitol building is the place for you!  It's made from Texas pink granite and is also the tallest Capitol building in all of the 50 United States!

:star: Do you have a fun fact about Austin?  Share it here!  Let's see if it's true when we visit SXSW!

P.S. - Thanks to megturney, damphyr, and StJoan for their contributions to this blog!

One of my favorite restaurants, Frank, is within walking distance of the festival - the food there is great, though definitely not heart healthy! They were utterly mobbed during the music festival last year, but hopefully it'll be easier to get in during Interactive.
